Richard Cleverley graduated from BYU-Idaho in Violin Performance with private instruction from Dallin Hansen and Emma Rubinstein. He is currently pursuing his Master’s degree in Violin Performance at ASU under the direction of Katie McLin. He has also received coachings from the Shanghai, Brentano, Ying, and Cypress Quartets.
Experience:
Richard has been giving private instruction for over six years. To become a more effective teacher, he completed two pedagogy internships and two additional college pedagogy courses that emphasized teaching beginning and intermediate students.
Richard has a wide range of performing experience with solo, chamber, and orchestral engagements. He has been a member of the Boise Philharmonic, Idaho Falls Symphony, ASU Symphony, and has held concertmaster positions with BYU-Idaho Symphony, Sinfonietta, and University Orchestra. He has placed in several competitions including 2nd place at the state collegiate chamber competition, 3rd place at the Idaho Civic Symphony young artist competition, and was a concerto winner at BYU-Idaho.
In 2008, Richard was selected to be a representative at the Kennedy Center Music Institute. During this program, he received training from Oleg Rylatko (Concertmaster of the National Opera), performed in the Millennium Stage concert series, and was a first violinist for the Kennedy Center Institute concert programs. Richard also performs regularly on viola and has held several principal viola positions throughout his college programs.
Teaching Philosophy:
Richard describes his teaching approach: "My teaching methods revolve around relaxation and attention to the details of human physiology. Playing the violin should feel and look effortless. If playing or performing is uncomfortable, then there is no motivation or pleasure in the music-making process. I also believe in setting individualized goals and constantly strategizing how best to achieve them. Many of my life lessons have been realized in a practice room."
